Creative space

I started the New year thinkiing that my office/studio space was pretty uninspiring and needed a face lift. I just thought that given that I do spend quite a bit of time there it should be an inspiring place. It has been quite the task doing everything but I am happy to say that it is almost complete and even though I say it myself, it is pretty cool. I have had lots of help from my kids who love working with dad of course and I too enjoy them so much. I am looking forward to getting back in there and beginning to record a few new things and perhaps write some new tunes and such.
One thing that was very funny was that when I went to the counter space maker he asked me what colour I wanted. I said "it doesn't matter too much as long as it's funky" he said arn't you involving your wife in that decision to which I replied " this is my space and I can do what I like there" he laughed and said I could tell you wern't fitting out a kitchen because you wouldn't get away with that then! Oh the joys of communication eh?
Thanks for popping by and do join the mailing list to be kept informed of new things. ( I will never spam you I promise)
with love, Graham.

I will be performing a gig at the worship cafe in Kelowna BC on January 17th I guess it will be a good chance to thank God for tea. Over the years I have used tea to cheer me up. It is a comforting thing for me to put the kettle on and make a nice cuppa and has consoled me on many occasions! If you can tune in on line please do. www.worshpcafe.net 4pm Pacific standard time. I will think of more things to be thankful for by then!! Cheers, Graham

Christmas fun

So I worked with the Kids to put the Christmas tree up and hung the lights on the front of the house and it was so much fun. You should see the tree with so many home made ornaments that the kids made! It looks fantastic. I remember the experience fom when I was a kid too, I always loved the warm feeling of contentment staring at the glow of the christmas lights and hearing the Christmas Carols playing in the back ground. I am not a great shopper but I do enjoy giving the gifts and all the fun that Christmas is with my family.
I just put up a Youtube posting of a Christmas Carol I recorded with my Dad. It's called Silent night. Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HT91MrCzqU I wish you and yours a really Happy Christmas nd a prosperous NewYear. Thanks for stopping by the site. Graham.

BALI

I am about to head off to Bali which I found out is in Indonesia. I am so looking forward to it because it is a part of the world I have never been to. I guess I am a bit aprehensive given that it will be so different than what I am used to but I love the adventure. I look forward to playing my music there and seeing if it translates as well. After the trip I will visit Hong Kong as well which should be a blast too. I am always amazed at the way that music has allowed me to see the world. I encourage younger artists all the time to keep at it because the music can open up so many possibilities to you especially if you dont get entangled in the pursuit of stardom. There's a lot of musicians out there and very few are famous but we still make a living, now that is cool. If you live in Bali I will see you in the curry house... Keep being you Graham.

Thankful

We just celebrated Thanksgiving in Canada which is a great feast of family fun and turkey! I have been so struck by how important it is to be thankful for the small stuff. Thankfulness is such a foundational attitude which can determine how we view life and how we react when things either go great or even how we endure in the hard times as well. I have been thinking about how thankfulness is like an antidote to discontentment or selfishness or any of the the other ugly things that surface in me when I forget to say thanks. So today I am trying to walk around being thankful and let's face it there are many things to be thankful for. On a more spiritual note I was also thinking about how the bible teaches us to be thankful in all circumstances and how hard this is especially in the tough times! With this in mind I thought how even if life is really tough and I am suffering loss or grief there is still an eternal hope that I have, the hope that one day I will pass through the veil of death and in that moment all suffering will cease forever and for this I am unbelievably thankful for what Christ has done on the cross for me. So that's me on this thankgiving weekend in Canada. Oh I almost forgot.....Thanks for popping by!! Graham.

north

When I first came to Canada from Britain I had no idea of the vastness of the country. I remember seeing the great lakes from the air and I thought I was stil over the Atlantic but still the best way to get an idea of the scale of the country is not from the air, rather it is by travelling the roads and seeing the hour after hour of breath taking scenery along the way. I just returned from a long trip up north, well actualy even though we drove for two days we were actually only part way up the country! The North of Canada is amazing. The people are friendly and hardy and the terrain is very sweet. it's great to see the wildlife especially the buffalo roaming around and the deer and even bears! After playing music at a family camp fr a week we made the long trek home again. On the second day we drove 14 hours which is a long day especially with young children. Memories are made of such things and I am glad that we put our selves out to create precious memories as a family. Upon returning I said to my wife Natalia, "well we made it and we still love each other and like each other!" anyone who has braved such a trip will understand what we meant. When we got home the air in our town was thick with smoke as 3 major forest fires ravaged the outlying areas causing some 6000 people to be evacuated. Canada is a wild place but how I love it here. Thanks for your kind interest in what I am up to. Many blessings Graham.

Documentary

The year began with a conversation with an old friend of mine called Doug Koy who is a TV personality from Vancouver BC. He has been making a documentary about Israel which he told me was a look at Israel through the lens of how the country has amazing resources and people and how the country is a blessed place for many reasons outside of just a religious context. I was intreagued by this and took him up on an invitation he gave me to submit some original music for the project, by writing what was to become my first song of 2009 called "In His love He has Chosen you" I will begin recording this song very soon with the idea of it being included in some way in the project. It is very exciting and also illuminating for me especially because although I undrstand that Israel is a historical place it also seems to be very strategic in the Middle East. I was very saddened by the images of the fighting in Gaza and my prayers went up for the many innocents caught in the middle of everything. I don't pretend to understand it all but there is something way bigger than what we see in the natural going on there.
The documentary I mentioned before can be explored at www.theoriginalprimise.com
Other musical stuff is mainly localised at the moment which is probably good given the snow in Canada! I have loved performing with the Andrew Smith Trio locally. Andrew is an amazing tap style guitarist and an awesome song writer and a great friend to boot! I have also been involved with a teriffic sustainability conference here where the organisers use various forms of media including video, dance, oratory and music to convey some of the issues related to sustainability. Again it has been challenging for me as i am generally one who feels pretty overwhelmed by the enormity of the issues which leaves me feeling pretty helpless to change much, but hey I have been turning more lights off and the thermostat down abit more lately. Every little bit can make a big difference! ( I wrote a song the other day with that as the title!!)
I am feeling the urge to get back in the studio to record some new songs for my own CD and although I have nothing planned as yet I think it is in the pipe. I've just got to get the crap out of the pipe first!
Thanks for your kind interest in what I get up to it means a lot to know that you are mindful of me and my work.
Keep the creative juices going,
Untill next time take good care and make sure to love your family with everything you've got
Graham

Babies and steel Guitars

Life has been made even sweeter lately by the safe arrival of our new Daughter Anya Esther Rose on the 19th October. She is very cute and has brought much joy to our home. The profound experience of new birth brings many things into focus and also raises many new questions and concerns as I observe this rather strange world we live in. There is so much uncertainty everywhere and yet I have been reminded again that I was born naked and with nothing, completely dependant of others to help me and even though I fight it, the fact remains that I still am dependant on others for help and ultimately I actually don't have anything really, it is all lent to us by the big Man who one day will call me home as naked as I arrived here! What a wierd life eh?
Anyway that's what our baby has done for me! Made me review life and regain perspective again. Perhaps you haven't held a baby for a while, I encourage you to do so again and sit in the peace of the moment and let God speak to you. It's qite amazing what comes into your heart.
I am also laughing a lot lately because a few years ago I bought an old Lap stell while on a trip to Vancouver. It was an impulse buy costing probably twice as much money as I actually earned from the gigs I did on the trip. I justified it by saying that it will make me money if I learn how to play it! Anyway since then I have become a bit of a slide guru in these parts and pretty much every recording session I have done for people recently has been a Lap Steel session!! I am thinking of getting two half coconuts and a grass skirt so I can look the part now! It is all very funny for me.
So anyway these are my latest meanderings, thanks for stopping by the site. Please feel free to let me know what you think of it all.
Have a peaceful Christmas.
Love
Graham.

Just back

I just go tback from our Northern BC Tour with my good friend Russ Rosen and our band of friends. It was an amazing time. Very cool to be in a place where it doesn't get dark! it was always hard to know when to stop playing because we had no reference point because many of the shows were out doors. We went as far north as Fort Nelson which is 300 miles up the Alaska Hwy. We saw moose and bear and Eagles and the odd human! Canada is an amazing vast place!! The music was realy fun and it was great to bring hope to some towns where things are very tough for people, Mackenzie was one such town. The people there are resiliant and are holding onto their faith in the face of real hardships. We loved it there and counted it a joy to play for those people. Every town we went to we were so welcomed and appeciated. Those Northerners know how to throw a party!!
As part of the fund raising for this trip we printed some great T shirts. If you would like one you can get them at http://russrosenband.ca
Thanks for droping by the site.
Blessings on you and yours
Graham.
